Japan Extends Support to Landmine Clearance Operation in
Southern Lebanon and Baalbeck-Hermel Governorate
The Government of Japan extends a total of 1,295,509 dollars in grants to support landmine clearance operations in Arsal, Baalbeck District, Baalbeck-Hermel Governorate and in Marwahin and Al-Dhaira, Tyre District, South Governorate. On December 15, 2021, Ambassador OKUBO Takeshi signed grant agreements with Dan Church Aid Lebanon and Mines Advisory Group Lebanon
The Government of Japan has supported landmine clearance across Lebanon since 2001. Through extending its years-long partnership with Dan Church Aid Lebanon, the Government of Japan aims at eradicating landmines in southern Lebanon to mark the culmination of its decades-long support. The Government of Japan embarks on financing operations in north as well including Baalbeck-Hermel Governorate in partnership with Mines Advisory Group Lebanon, so as to ensure the geographic balance of landmine clearance. These operations under the two grant agreements will secure the safety for 121,850 persons as well as making agricultural land reusable for both the refugees and host communities
At the signing ceremony, Dan Church Aid Lebanon’s Country Director Matthew Benson expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support for their operations, emphasizing Japan’s role in the socio-economic development and security of the population in the region. Mines Advisory Group Lebanon’s Country Director Sylvain Lefort also expressed his appreciation for Japan’s long-standing support in landmine clearance. On the other hand, Ambassador Okubo commended both organizations on their excellence in clearing threats all across Lebanon and assured that Japan would stand by Lebanon during these difficult times
