almontasher أعلنت دائرة الاقتصاد في كلية الآداب والعلوم في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، بالتعاون مع دائرة الاقتصاد في كلية عدنان القصار للأعمال في الجامعة اللبنانية الأميركية، عن إطلاق سلسلة ندوات بيروت للأبحاث الاقتصادية. وتعزّز هذه المبادرة التبادل الأكاديمي من خلال الجمع بين الاقتصاديين والباحثين وصانعي السياسات من مختلف المؤسسات. وتوفر سلسلة ندوات بيروت للأبحاث الاقتصادية فرصة للباحثين الأكاديميين والخبراء للمشاركة في مناقشات هادفة حول الموضوعات والقضايا الاقتصادية الرئيسية التي تؤثر على لبنان والمنطقة. ومن خلال هذه الشراكة، تقوم الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت والجامعة اللبنانية الأميركية بإنشاء منصة للحوار الأكاديمي القوي وتبادل المعرفة. وسلسلة الندوات هذه مفتوحة لجميع الزملاء من المؤسسات الأكاديمية والاقتصادية في جميع أنحاء بيروت وخارجها، وتوفر بيئة اشتمالية ومتيسّرة للتعاون الفكري.

 

هذا وقد عقدت ندوتان في شهر شباط، ومن المقرر عقد ندوة ثالثة في شهر آذار.

 

الندوة الأولى الافتتاحية للسلسلة حملت العنوان “تأثير التعليم على القيم” وعُقدت في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت. وشارك في الندوة المتحدث المتميز إسحاق ديوان، أستاذ الممارسات الاقتصادية في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت منذ العام الفائت، ومدير الأبحاث في مختبر التمويل من أجل التنمية في كلية باريس للاقتصاد، والمسؤول عن برنامج الاقتصاد السياسي في منتدى البحوث الاقتصادية.

 

وعُقدت الندوة الثانية في الجامعة اللبنانية الأميركية، حيث قدّم الأستاذ المشارك في الاقتصاد ودراسات أوروبا الشرقية في جامعة برلين الحرة ثيوكاريس غريغورياديس محاضرته: “اليوتوبيا الرجعية: التطرّف والعنف السياسي في الإمبراطورية الروسية.” وسَبَرت الندوة جذور التطرف والعنف السياسي، وسلطت الضوء على السياقات التاريخية التي شكلت الصراعات الجيوسياسية الحديثة.

 

ومن المقرر أن تعقد الندوة الثالثة من سلسلة ندوات بيروت الاقتصادية في الحادي عشر من شهر آذار المقبل في قاعة مؤتمرات معهد عصام فارس في حرم الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت. وستضم الندوة برانكو ميلانوفيتش، أستاذ الأبحاث الشهير في مركز الدراسات العليا بجامعة مدينة نيويورك، وكبير الباحثين في مركز ستون للامساواة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية. وسيلقي ميلانوفيتش محاضرة حول عدم المساواة الاقتصادية العالمية، معتمداً على أبحاثه المكثفة ورؤيته كخبير رائد في التفاوتات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية.

 

وتأتي سلسلة ندوات بيروت للأبحاث الاقتصادية في إطار الجهود المستمرة التي تبذلها الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت والجامعة اللبنانية الأميركية لتعزيز التعاون بين المؤسسات الأكاديمية في المنطقة. ومن خلال دعوة باحثين من جميع أنحاء منطقة بيروت الكبرى، يأمل المنظمون في تحفيز النقد وتبادل الأفكار والتعاون الأكاديمي حول مواضيع بحثية رائدة في هذا التخصص.

The Beirut Economics Research Seminar Series: A New Collaborative Platform for Academic Exchange at AUB and LAU

The American University of Beirut’s (AUB) Department of Economics at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the Lebanese American University’s (LAU) Department of Economics at the Adnan Kassar School of Business, announced the launch of the Beirut Economics Research Seminar Series. This initiative fosters academic exchange by bringing together academic researchers from a wide range of institutions.

The Beirut Economics Research Seminar Series provides an opportunity for academics in Beirut to engage and interact with world renown scholars on key research topics in economics, finance, and public policy. Through this partnership, AUB and LAU are creating a platform for robust academic dialogue and knowledge exchange. The seminar series is open to all colleagues from academic and economic policy institutions across Beirut and beyond, offering an inclusive and accessible environment for intellectual collaboration.

Two sessions were held in February, with a third planned to take place in March 2025.

The inaugural seminar of the series, titled “The Impact of Education on Values” took place at AUB. It featured distinguished speaker Ishac Diwan, professor of practice in economics at AUB since 2024, research director of the finance for development lab at the Paris School of Economics, and in charge of the political economy program of the Economic Research Forum.

The second seminar took place at LAU, where Associate Professor of Economics and East European Studies at Freie Universität Berlin Theocharis N. Grigoriadis presented his lecture, “Reactionary Utopia: Radicalization and Political Violence in the Russian Empire.” The event explored the roots of radicalization and political violence, shedding light on historical contexts that have shaped modern geopolitical conflicts.

The third session of the Beirut Economics Research Seminar Series is scheduled to take place on March 11, 2025, at the Issam Fares Institute Conference Room on the AUB campus. This event will feature Branko Milanovic, renowned research professor at the Graduate Center at City University of New York, and senior scholar at The Stone Center on Socioeconomic Inequality. Milanovic will deliver a lecture on global economic inequality, drawing from his extensive research and insights as a leading expert on socioeconomic disparities.

The series is part of an ongoing effort by AUB and LAU to promote collaboration between academic institutions in the region. By inviting scholars from across the Greater Beirut area, the organizers hope to stimulate critical, exchange of ideas, and academic collaboration on frontier research topics in the discipline.
