انتخاب رئيس الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت فضلو خوري إلى الأكاديمية الأميركية للفنون والعلوم

AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

almontasher:أعلن رئيس مجلس أمناء الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت عبدو قديفة، أنه يوم الأربعاء في الثالث والعشرين من نيسان الجاري، تم انتخاب رئيس الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت الدكتور فضلو خوري، كزميل جديد في الأكاديمية الأميركية للفنون والعلوم، في فئة القيادة التعليمية والأكاديمية. وقال قديفة، “ينضم الدكتور خوري إلى مجموعة من القادة الموقّرين المعترف بهم لمساهماتهم الاستثنائية في تقدم التعليم والسياسات والقيادة في المجال الأكاديمي.”

 

وردّ الدكتور خوري معلّقاً، “أنا فخور بشكل خاص أن الرئيس الفخري لمجلس أمناء الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت فيليب خوري رشّحني لهذه العضوية، مستنداً إلى العمل الذي قمنا به جميعاً، معاً، خلال العقد الماضي في الجامعة.” وأضاف، “تأسست الأكاديمية الأميركية للفنون والعلوم في العام 1780 على يد جون آدامز، وجيمس باودوين، وجون هانكوك وآخرين. وشملت أول كوكبة انتخبت لعضويتها جورج واشنطن وبنيامين فرانكلين. وهذه الكوكبة تشعرني بالمهابة. وستكون والدتي مبتهجة ولا شك لأنني انتُخبت إلى الكوكبة ذاتها التي انتُخبت إليها غلوريا ستاينم وهي إحدى بطلاتها، وإحدى أعظم أبطال النِّسْوِيَّة.”

 

متناولاً تأثير الدكتور فضلو خوري على الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، قال قديفة، “الدكتور فضلو خوري، الرئيس السادس عشر للجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، برز كقائد تحويلي منذ توليه منصبه في العام 2015. وتحت إشرافه، شَقَّتِ الجامعة عُبَابَ تحديات كبيرة، منها الأزمات الاقتصادية وانفجار بيروت في الرابع من آب 2020 ووباء كوفيد – 19. وفي الوقت ذاته حققت انجازات بارزة مثل إعادة العمل بالحيازة الأكاديمية، وإنشاء الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت اونلاين، وإطلاق الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت – مديترانيو وهي أول حرم توأم للجامعة خارج لبنان. لقد أدّت قيادة الدكتور خوري دوراً محورياً في تعزيز السمعة العالمية للجامعة، وانعكس ذلك في الارتفاع الملفت في تصنيفها الدولي.”

 

وتابع قديفة كلامه مشدّداً على الأهمية الأوسع لهذا التكريم، “منذ العام 1780، كرّمت الأكاديمية الأميركية للفنون والعلوم صفة الممتازية وجمعت قادة من جميع التخصصات والأقسام لدراسة أفكار جديدة، ومعالجة مسائل مهمّة، وللعمل سويّا لتعزيز اهتمام وشرف وكرامة وسعادة شعب حرّ، ومستقل، وخلوق.”

 

وخلص قديفة إلى القول، “إن انتخاب الدكتور فضلو خوري للأكاديمية الأميركية للفنون والعلوم هو شهادة على التزامه الثابت بالممتازيّة الأكاديمية، والقيادة المبتكرة، وتحسين المجتمع من خلال التعليم والبحوث.”

وعلّقت لوري باتون، رئيسة الأكاديمية الأميركية للفنون والعلوم، على أحدث كوكبة من المنتخبين إلى الأكاديمية: “إن إنجازات هؤلاء الأعضاء الجُدُد يمكن أن تملأ مجلدات حول القدرة البشرية على الاكتشاف، والإبداع، والقيادة، والمثابرة. إنهم شهادة رائعة على قدرة المعرفة على توسيع آفاقنا وتعميق إدراكنا. اننا ندعو كل عضو جديد للاحتفال بإنجازه ومؤازرة الأكاديمية في عملها لتعزيز الصالح العام.”

 

 

 

AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Chairman of the American University of Beirut (AUB) Board of Trustees Abdo G. Kadifa, announced that on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri, AUB president, was elected as a new fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the category of Educational and Academic Leadership. “Dr. Khuri joins an esteemed group of leaders recognized for their exceptional contributions to the advancement of education, policy, and leadership in the academic sphere,” Kadifa said.

In response to the news, Dr. Khuri remarked, “I am particularly proud to have been nominated by Board Chair Emeritus Philip S. Khoury for work we have all done together over the last decade at AUB.” He added, “The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1780 by, among others, John Adams, James Bowdoin, and John Hancock. Its first elected class included George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. This company is humbling. And my mother will no doubt be thrilled that I was elected in the same class as Gloria Steinem, one of her heroes and one of feminism’s greatest champions.”

Reflecting on Dr. Khuri’s impact at AUB, Kadifa noted, “Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri, the 16th president of the American University of Beirut, has been a transformative leader since assuming office in 2015. Under his guidance, AUB has navigated significant challenges, including economic crises, the Beirut explosion on August 4, 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic, while achieving remarkable milestones such as the reintroduction of academic tenure, the establishment of AUB Online, and the launch of AUB Mediterraneo, the university’s first twin campus outside Lebanon. Dr. Khuri’s leadership has also been instrumental in enhancing AUB’s global reputation, reflected in its dramatic rise in international rankings.”

Kadifa went on to emphasize the broader significance of the honor: “Since 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has honored excellence and convened leaders from across disciplines and divides to examine new ideas, address issues of importance, and work together ‘to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.’”

He concluded, “Dr. Khuri’s election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is a testament to his unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovative leadership, and the betterment of society through education and research.”

American Academy of Arts and Sciences President Laurie L. Patton commented on the academy’s newest class: “These new members’ accomplishments speak volumes about the human capacity for discovery, creativity, leadership, and persistence. They are a stellar testament to the power of knowledge to broaden our horizons and deepen our understanding.” She added, “We invite every new member to celebrate their achievement and join the Academy in our work to promote the common good.”
