المملكة المتحدة تبحث في أمن الحدود وتدعو إلى التنفيذ الكامل لقرار مجلس الأمن 1701

UK DISCUSSES BORDER SECURITY AND CALLS FOR FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF UNSCR 1701

خلال اجتماع الذي تم البحث فيه موضوع حماية الحدود البرية السورية-اللبنانية، قدم السفير البريطاني هايمش كاول تعازيه في وفاة جندي في الجيش اللبناني الأسبوع الماضي ودعا إلى استعادة الهدوء على طول الخط الأزرق.

التقى كل من السفير البريطاني في لبنان هايمش كاول والسفيرة الأميركية دوروثي شيا والسفيرة الكندية ستيفاني ماكولوم قائد الجيش العماد جوزاف عون خلال اجتماع اللجنة التوجيهية الرفيعة المستوى (HLSC) لمناقشة الأمن على الحدود اللبنانية السورية.

تشرف هذه اللجنة على الجهود الممولة دولياً لدعم أفواج الحدود البرية الأربعة بهدف مواصلة توفير الأمن وتعزيز سلطة الدولة اللبنانية على طول حدودها البرية مع سوريا.

وعقب اللقاء قال السفير كاول:

“تشرّفت لقاء العماد عون ومناقشة التقدم الإيجابي في مشروع الحدود.

“أحزنني وفاة الجندي في الجيش اللبناني في جنوب لبنان الأسبوع الماضي ونقلت تعازي الحارة لعائلته ورفاقه.

“شدّدت مع العماد عون على ضرورة وقف الأعمال العدائية على طول الخط الأزرق وتجديد الالتزام بتنفيذ قرار مجلس الأمن الدولي 1701.

 “إن الأعمال العدائية المستمرة في جنوب لبنان لا تؤدي إلا إلى تأخير أي حل طويل الأمد للسلام.

“وأنا كالعادة معجب بالعمل المتميز لضباط وجنود الجيش اللبناني خلال هذه الفترة الصعبة. 

“خصصت المملكة المتحدة أكثر من 99 مليون جنيه إسترليني منذ العام 2009 لدعم تحسين قدرات الجيش اللبناني بما في ذلك من خلال التطوير والتحديث. نحن فخورون بمساهمتنا في بناء سمعة الجيش اللبناني كقوات مسلحة محترمة ومهنية قادرة على الدفاع عن لبنان وتوفير الأمن على طول حدوده مع سوريا.“

 

 

UK DISCUSSES BORDER SECURITY AND CALLS FOR FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF UNSCR 1701 

During a meeting to discuss security on the Lebanese-Syrian border, Ambassador Hamish Cowell expressed his condolences for the death of a LAF soldier in Lebanon last week and called for the restoration of calm on the Blue Line.

The British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, the US Ambassador, Dorothy Shea, and the Canadian Ambassador Stefanie McCollum, met the Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) General Joseph Aoun during the High Level Steering Committee (HLSC) to discuss security on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

The HLSC oversees internationally funded efforts to support the four Land Border Regiments to continue to deliver external security and reinforce the authority of the Lebanese state along its land border with Syria.

Following the meeting, Ambassador Cowell said:

“It was an honour to meet General Aoun to discuss positive progress on the border project.

“I was saddened to hear about the death of a LAF soldier in south Lebanon last week. I convey my deepest sympathies to his family and comrades.

“With General Aoun I stressed the need for a cessation of hostilities across the Blue Line and for a renewed commitment to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

“Ongoing hostilities in South Lebanon only serve to delay any long term solution for peace.

“I am, as ever, impressed by Lebanese Armed Forces’ outstanding work of its officers and soldiers during this challenging time.

“Since 2009, the UK has committed over £99 million to support optimisation of LAF capabilities, including through development and modernisation. We are proud of our contribution to building the LAF’s reputation as a respected, professional armed forces able to defend Lebanon and provide security along its border with Syria.”
