Peace cannot be achieved alone – Marking the International Day of Peace

(Naqoura) — The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) held on 21 September 2022 a ceremony to commemorate the International Day of Peace at its headquarters in Naqoura, South Lebanon.

Peacekeepers representing UNIFIL’s current 48 troop-contributing countries were joined at the event by representatives of the local authorities, religious leaders, Lebanese armed and security forces and members of the international community.

UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Aroldo Lázaro, reviewed an Honour Guard and, together with Brigadier General Roger Helou representing the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), laid wreaths at the cenotaph in memory of the over 300 UNIFIL peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty in South Lebanon since 1978.

Maj. Gen. Lázaro noted that “along the Blue Line, we have seen relative stability, not peace. But thanks to the commitment of the parties and to the effectiveness of UNIFIL’s liaison and coordination mechanisms, so far, that stability has held.”

The UNIFIL Force Commander confirmed the mission’s commitment to peace and security in south Lebanon and stressed the importance of the partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces in implementing Security Council Resolution 1701.

However, Maj. Gen. Lázaro was cognizant of the challenges ahead. “Peace is not something that we, international peacekeepers, can achieve alone. We rely on our strong relationships with the communities who host and welcome us, who greet us every day as we perform our daily activities, and with whom we may share a coffee or a meal to discuss their needs and concerns,” he added.

During the ceremony, military staff officers were awarded with the UN Peacekeeping Medal in recognition for their participation in UNIFIL, and as is customary, white doves were released at UNIFIL’s cenotaph to symbolize peace.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981. It is dedicated to cease-fire and non-violence and is an occasion during which all promote tolerance, justice and human rights. Each year on this day, the United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities and to commemorate the day through activities that promote peace.

لا يمكن تحقيق السلام بمفردنا – الاحتفال باليوم الدولي للسلام

(الناقورة) – أقامت قوة الأمم المتحدة المؤقتة في لبنان (اليونيفيل) في 21 أيلول/ سبتمبر 2022 احتفالاً بمناسبة اليوم الدولي للسلام في مقرّها العام في الناقورة بجنوب لبنان.

إلى جانب حفظة السلام الذين يمثلون الدول المساهمة بقوات في اليونيفيل وعددها 48 دولة، شارك في الحدث ممثلون عن السلطات المحلية والقادة الدينيين والقوات المسلحة اللبنانية وقوى الأمن اللبنانية وممثلون عن المجتمع الدولي.

في بداية الحفل، استعرض رئيس بعثة اليونيفيل وقائدها العام اللواء أرولدو لاثارو حرس الشرف، وقام مع العميد روجيه حلو ممثلاً القوات المسلحة اللبنانية بوضع أكاليل الزهور على النصب التذكاري تكريماً لذكرى أكثر من 300 جندي حفظ سلام تابعين لليونيفيل فقدوا حياتهم أثناء أداء واجبهم في جنوب لبنان منذ عام 1978.

وأشار اللواء لاثارو إلى أنه “على طول الخط الأزرق، شهدنا استقراراً نسبياً وليس سلاماً. ولكن بفضل التزام الأطراف وفعالية اليات الارتباط والتنسيق في اليونيفيل استطعنا الحفاظ على هذا الاستقرار”.

وأكد القائد العام لليونيفيل التزام البعثة بالسلام والأمن في جنوب لبنان، مشدداً على أهمية الشراكة مع القوات المسلحة اللبنانية في تنفيذ قرار مجلس الأمن الدولي 1701.

ومع ذلك، كان اللواء لاثارو مستشرفاً للتحديات المقبلة، وقال: “السلام ليس شيئاً يمكننا، نحن حفظة السلام الدوليين، تحقيقه بمفردنا. نحن نعتمد على علاقاتنا القوية مع المجتمعات التي تستضيفنا وترحّب بنا، والتي ترحّب بنا كل يوم أثناء قيامنا بأنشطتنا اليومية، والتي قد نتشارك معها فنجان من القهوة أو وجبة طعام خلال مناقشة احتياجاتهم وهواجسهم”.

وخلال الحفل، مُنح ضباط الأركان العسكريون ميداليات الأمم المتحدة لحفظ السلام تقديراً لمشاركتهم في اليونيفيل. وكما جرت العادة، تم إطلاق الحمام الأبيض فوق النصب التذكاري لليونيفيل كرمز للسلام.

أقرت الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة اليوم الدولي للسلام في عام 1981، وهو مكرّس لوقف إطلاق النار واللاعنف ومناسبة يروج خلالها الجميع للتسامح والعدالة وحقوق الإنسان. في هذا اليوم من كل عام، تدعو الأمم المتحدة جميع الدول والشعوب إلى احترام وقف الأعمال العدائية والاحتفال بهذا اليوم من خلال الأنشطة التي تعزز السلام.
